Those who received the scripture, and know it as it should be known, will believe in this. As for those who disbelieve, they are the losers.

This refers to the pious element among the People of the Book. Since these people read the Book with sincerity and honesty of purpose, they are inclined to accept whatever they find to be true according to it.

Tilavet, birden çok şeyin, aralarına farklı türden bir şey karışmayacak şekilde peş peşe sıralanmasıdır (Müfredat). "Gerektiği gibi tilavet" ise kitabı doğru anlamak için bağlantılı ayetleri birlikte okumaktır. Kur'an ayetlerini bağlantılarıyla okumak tilavet olduğu gibi onları, Allah'ın diğer kitaplarındaki ayetlerle bağlantılı olarak okumak da tilavettir. Bu metoda göre okuma yapan ehlikitap da gelecek son kitaba inanma yükümlülüğünü kendi elindeki kitapta bulur ve Kur'an ile ilişkisini kurarak onun da Allah'ın ayetlerinden oluştuğunu anlar.
